TAMING THE TONGUE

If you have ever said anything you regret saying, keep reading. Here is what James says about the tongue:

“But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God.” (James 3:8–9)

Having control over something as big as a ship is good, but having control over something as powerful as our tongue allows us to be effective Disciples of Jesus.

It allows you to speak life into others, edify, comfort, and build up, all while binding things that are not of God. Now that is the good news, and the bad news is that James says no one can tame their tongue.

If we can not tame our tongues, is there any hope? Our hope is in Jesus. When spiritually reborn, we have the ability to call the power of the Holy Spirit for help.

Have you said anything that you regretted once you were a Believer? Of course you have! But do not worry; James even offers a solution.

James first clearly lets us know what is not of God:

“But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.” (James 3:14–16)

Envy and self-seeking are mentioned twice. Whether praying for someone or sharing a Bible verse, if there is any envy or self-seeking in what you say, it is not of God. We must not lie against this truth.

Before we speak, ask the following question — “Is what I am going to say going to hurt or help the person I am speaking to.” If the answer helps, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, humility, and self-control will flow out of your mouth.

The choice is up to you.

What words will come out of your mouth today?

“Heavenly Father, Thank You for giving me instructions for a blessed life by controlling my tongue. I know the only way for this to happen is for me to have Your Holy Spirit living in me. You said without Your Spirit, my tongue will be full of deadly poison. I want my life to reflect You and Your love and kindness. Please help me today and in the days to come as I ask for Your help. Thank You, Father. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
